Once while I was teaching in Canada, I told a joke to an audience and not one person in the audience understood it as a joke. The reason, they did not have a point of reference to help them understand.
As an example, In USAmerica, late-night comedians tell jokes that are heard on both the left and right coast and in the middle of the country. Each joke is crafted so that the audience regardless of what part of USAmerica they are watching from will understanding the central point of reference of the joke.
If you understand the point of reference, you most likely will “get” the joke. If not, you will miss out on its meaning.
